Kurious about Kitchen Islands? - presented by The Kitchen Yard

Kitchen Islands come in all shapes and sizes and are becoming more and more popular since the advent of the Kitchen being the Centre of the House. We need somewhere for friends and family to gather, chatting over a glass of wine as the cooking is happening and going on to enjoy meals together. The type of Kitchen Island you chose is an important decision to make as the Kitchen Island is actually the Centre of the Centre of the House.

Firstly do you want a Functional Island or one to Socialise around or both?

Lets start with a simple Butchers Block.

Everyone needs a chopping board and with all the necessary equipment easy at hand.

How about a portable one, so you can move it round the kitchen as you need, beside the cooker or the sink, or even out onto the patio for the odd Barbeque.

My favourite Functional Island, the Wine Rack.
Oh Heck, lets just have the Whole Bar.

Here in British Isles we like to socialise around the cooking area. (Notice the Wine Rack)

In the USA and Australia, most kitchens are open plan into the Living Area with seating behind. (Beers probably in an American Fridge)

Or shall we go for the full fledged dining experience with a preparation and serving bar at the top? Very Italian.

When does a table become a Kitchen Island?        Answer - When you add a shelf under it for storage.

Add a 'Rug' of tiles underneath.

Maybe you can attempt to build your own Kitchen Island out of stone.

......Or even Lego.

You could make it extra decorative, either traditional or modern.

                    Rectangular,                                                                           Round

or even Oval.

Upcycling is all the rage. What can you find lying around to use? Old sewing machine table, any old vintage unit really. Put a nice wooden or marble worktop on it.
What are we thinking? Lets just put the whole kitchen in a Kitchen Island!!!

Nah, too small.......

     That's more like it!
